Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology Conducts Hands-on Workshop on Climate Data Analysis Using Python
28 August, 2025
The Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (CDHM) at Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, organized a three-day practical training workshop on Python programming focused on climate data analysis. The workshop, which began on Thursday, will continue until Saturday.
About 15 students participated, including fourth-year Hydrology and Meteorology majors from Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus and second-semester students from CDHM, Tribhuvan University. The workshop aims to develop participants’ data analysis skills by providing an introductory experience in Python programming and its application in climate science.
The primary objective is to build capacity in climate data interpretation using Python, enabling students to better understand and analyze climate-related datasets.
The program started with informal introductions among faculty members, trainers, and participants, followed by an overview of CDHM’s history, achievements, ongoing projects, course syllabus, and its contributions to hydrology and meteorology and Cryospheric research. Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Tek Bahadur Chhetri, encouraged the participants to take this training opportunity seriously and wished them successful program throughout the training period.
The interactive workshop was led by Mr. Him Kiran Paudel, with assistance from Mr. Sandesh Tamang and Ms. Bimala Ghale. On the first day, participants learned how to download and use Python environment, process various codes, and explored various Python packages, libraries, datasets, and functions relevant to their needs.
At the end of the first day of the training, participants learned the basics of the Python programming, including how to write and run simple codes. According to the trainer, participants will work on actual climate datasets, focusing on their analysis and interpretation during the following days.
This initiative highlights CDHM’s dedication to empowering students with essential technical skills that will advance research in climate science.
